It is 1921. Social pariah Millie Woodridge is obliged to obtain employment as a companion for ageing actress, Mrs Oakengate, when her father is unjustly executed on charges of espionage. During a weekend house party Millie meets handsome adventurer, James Haxby, and is soon drawn into the dark, but thrilling world of espionage. Unsure who to trust, Millie joins James in tracking down a callous murderer and uncovering the truth about her father.

This was the first novel to feature Mrs Oakengate (the second was A Collector of Hearts, and she also turns up as Countess Chlomsky in Eye of the Storm). She still remains one of my favourite 'bad' characters, though she did mellow eventually.Review:
I couldn't fault this book. It was well written with lots of interesting and likeable characters. Jay Robin amazon.co.ukInteresting plot with some likeable characters - and some it was fun to dislike. Patsy Collins amazon.co.uk
