About the Author

Robert Muchamore was born in Islington in 1972 and spent thirteen years working as a private investigator. The CHERUB series has won numerous awards, including the Red House Children's Book Award.

Ian Edginton is a British comic book writer who became successful in American comics before returning to work for 2000 AD, a weekly British science-fiction-oriented comic. He has created his own series as well as adapting other titles, including H.G. Wells' The War of the Worlds.

John Aggs is a British comic book artist who started out in webcomics, and in 2007 won the Grand Prize in the TokyoPop Rising Stars of Manga awards. Among his diverse work he has illustrated Philip Pullman's The Adventures of John Blake.

Gr 7-10-James has had a rough go of it lately. When a girl insults his overweight mom at school, he hits her and gets in a lot of trouble. He always seems to be in trouble. So when his mom passes away, and his waste of a stepfather separates him from his sister, James is beside himself. What's he to do? Then he wakes up one morning in the lush English countryside, only to discover that he's been enrolled in a covert finishing school for future British Intelligence officers. Recruited because of his geniuslike aptitude for math, among other things, he must prove himself when he reveals that he can't swim (a requirement of the program). Aggs's art is strong, and the use of bold color and sharp lines help drive much of the action and fighting James goes through before he gets initiated. Some elements are a little silly, such as the school's name being CHERUB (even the headmaster doesn't know what it stands for), but despite the fantastic situation of having a 12-year-old spy, it's all handled with a surprisingly levelheaded and grounded perspective.-Ryan P. James Choke doesn’t try to be a troublemaker. Situations just turn out wrong, even when he tries to defend himself against taunts from Samantha, the teacher’s pet. It doesn’t help that his mum really is quite large, but it’s mostly due to her bad leg. It also doesn’t help that James is secretly clever and freakishly good at math. After his mum suddenly passes away, James is put in a foster home and has to decide whether to continue on his thuggish path or build a new life—in a covert intelligence organization called CHERUB. This graphic-novel adaptation of Muchamore’s popular teen-spy series captures all of the excitement and authenticity of the original. Although the artwork is more functional than spectacular, the illustrations are well balanced with the dialogue/narration and do a fine job of pushing the quickly paced story forward. Ultimately, this is a great choice to bring reluctant or less-advanced readers into the thrilling series, and would also appeal to fans of Anthony Horowitz and Ally Carter.
