Children of the Holocaust

9781445144399: Children of the Holocaust

The Holocaust remains one of the most shocking events of the 20th century, one that still resonates strongly today. Its Nazi perpetrators showed no mercy, not even to children, so it is often the experiences of the children of this era that speak to us most powerfully. Children of the Holocaust explores the Holocaust through the eyes of the children who survived. Personal testimonies, diaries and quotes convey the tragedy of this historic period, as well as those moments of great fortitude, courage, and kindness. Young readers will find a riveting review of the period, starting with the early persecution of the Jews through the “final solution” and on into liberation, that includes:

  • An introduction to The Holocaust, what it was and how long it lasted
  • A timeline of events, glossary, and other resources for further reading
  • Powerful images of people, locations, and objects from the time

As the Holocaust moves farther away from us in history, it is important to keep it in the consciousness of the next generations. By using the experiences of children, this book is a powerful way to engage the attention and sympathy of today’s young people. This compelling book is a grade-appropriate text that educators can use to meet Common Core State Standards in English Language Arts. Full-color throughout with more than 50 images.

About the Author:

Alex Woolf has written more than 80 books, mainly for young people, on a range of hard-hitting topics, including terrorism and genocide. Alex has a personal connection with the Holocaust because his maternal grandfather's family was almost entirely wiped out by the Nazis.

Review:

“This nonfiction book succeeds in introducing children ages ten through thirteen to the Shoah (Holocaust), recognizing that it should be taught in some form to all children, regardless of religious and cultural differences, to preserve the memory of the cruel genocide. Woolf concisely deploys documentary archival material in a historical narrative in an effective way, with particular focus on the victimization by the Nazis of young people and children, and for a readership of children. If Holocaust materials are to teach children to become future torchbearers of memory, moral accountability, and ethical responsibility, this book is perhaps a beginning step in that direction of preserving memory, and hoping to transform children for the better. This is a book for all children of the world, as the Shoah is a clarion call for all humanity who must learn from the lessons of genocide in all its instances, as these threaten not only all human freedoms and dignity, but also the very essence of goodness potential in the human being created “in the image of God.” The book affirms that only at great peril to all humanity, we dare not forget and morally pledge, “never again.”
