Most of us know some of the basic landmarks of British history, things like the Roman invasion, 1066, Bannockburn, the Spanish Armada, Waterloo, the Somme, the Battle of Britain, etc. All fascinating and important, of course, but sometimes just focusing on key landmarks can leave a viewer missing out.
In this book, we’re going to take a rather different approach to the history of Britain. We’re still going to follow the basic chronological route of that story, we’re still going to keep sight of major landmarks to orientate ourselves, but primarily we’re going to focus on some of the many fascinating but less well-known aspects of our country’s amazing history. From the Brits who invited the Romans to invade, to the invention of the tin can and the Briton who almost beat the Wright brothers, here we discover fifty stories along a different route through our nation’s history.
We hope that you’ll be sometimes surprised, sometimes intrigued, sometimes amused, and often entertained. We hope that you’ll enjoy an approach to Britain that relishes at least a bit of the enormous richness of history that can’t always squeeze into more mainstream histories of our country, and come to know a slightly different, in some ways more intriguing, Britain because of it.
