From Booklist:
Brendan Daly, a member of the Irish White Hand gang, which ran the waterfront in Manhattan and Brooklyn during the 1920s, disappeared when his son, Gavin, was five, leaving Gavin with three things: a revolver, a cracked pocket watch, and a list of names and numbers. Despite a successful career in the antique business, Gavin, now 95, has always dreamed of solving his pa’s disappearance. When Gavin’s beloved older sister is tortured to death and the pocket watch—now extremely valuable—is stolen, Gavin calls on his contacts in the antique business to help recover the watch and avenge his sister, even as Detective Superintendent Roy Grace of the Sussex Police is following a similar trail. While Grace’s investigation is littered with bodies, his home seems idyllic: memories of his wife, Sandy, who disappeared years ago, are less painful, and loving partner Cleo and their infant son light up his life. That’s about to change, however, thanks to an ex-con out for revenge. Another strong entry in acclaimed British crime novelist James popular series. --Stephanie Zvirin
