"On War" is a long and intricate investigation of Carl von Clausewitz's observations based on his own experience in the Wars of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars and on considerable historical research into those wars and others. "On War" is shaped not only by purely military and political considerations but by Clausewitz's strong interests in art, science, and education. As a careful, systematic, philosophical examination of war in all its aspects as he saw it, "On War" is the West's premier work on the philosophy of war.

The growing interest in Clausewitz's theoretical, political and historical writings in recent years suggested that the time had come for an entirely new translation. We have based our work on the first edition of 1832, supplemented by the annotated German text published by Professor Werner Hahlweg in 1952, except where obscurities in the original edition-which Clausewitz himself never reviewed-made it seem advisable to accept later emendations.About the Author:
Carl Philipp Gottlieb von Clausewitz was a Prussian soldier and German military theorist who stressed the moral and political aspects of war.
