9781449031695: Energy & Society (Revised): The Relation Between Energy, Social Change, and Economic Development

Energy and Society (Revised) When first published in 1955, this book was among the first interpretive treatments of the connection between a society's energy conditions and evolution of its culture. The book begins with a basic discussion of the earliest forms of energy uses and evolves through a discussion of how the evolution of alternative energy converters has impacted the growth of civilization. Dr.Cottrell takes us from food gathering societies up through the beginning of the industrial revolution into the age of nuclear power. With each step of change, he discusses how society has changed and the impact these changes have had on economic, moral and social issues. Today, more than any time in history, the questions of energy sources, energy conversion, energy uses and energy distribution are among the greatest challenges faced by civilization. In this book, Dr. Cottrell does not give you answers or predictions but takes you through the thought processes necessary to overcome the multible barriers we face in moving into the future.

About the Author:

About the Author W. Fred Cottrell was born in Idaho Falls, Idaho in 1903, and grew up in Milford, Utah. He received his AB degree in history from Occidental College in 1925. In the fall of 1928 he entered Stanford University, and received his Ph.D. degree in political science in June of 1930. His Miami University career began in 1930 with a combined teaching position in political science and sociology. From 1959 to 1969, he was Chairman of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology. He was Director of the Scripps Foundation from 1964 to 1974 and consultant to Scripps from 1974 until his death on April 18, 1979. His book, Energy and Society, explored the interaction between the technology used to convert energy and how societies are organized. When it appeared in 1955, Energy and Society addressed an issue that was not to capture public attention for 20 years. The quality of Cottrell's insights in this area led to a resurgence of interest in energy issues. In 1974, he was voted Ohio's outstanding senior citizen. In 1974, he was the first recipient of Miami's most prestigious award, the Benjamin Harrison Medalion. He was selected to Ohio's Senior Citizens Hall of Fame in 1978 and was awarded an hornorary degree, Doctor of Humane Letters, by Miami.
