East Timor. In the final years of Indonesia's often brutal occupation of that tiny country, an aid worker (Lawrence Trevellyan) is sent to manage an Australian aid program, and, as a 'special requirement', keep an eye on what is happening. He becomes firmly committed to the people's struggle for independence. His stance puts him at odds with his government and employer, as well as with the Indonesian authorities and those who oppose Timor's independence struggle. As the violence mounts, he disappears. His son (Niall) seeks to find out what happened and in the process uncovers the hidden life of his father. Estranged from his wife and children, the journey his son makes brings them together again. But now that his father (Lawrence) is no longer alive, his emotions are stretched to the limits of regret. Why is reconciliation often so late?
