Book Description Createspace. Paperback. Book Condition: New. This item is printed on demand. Paperback. 158 pages. Revenge is Jim Staacks interpretation, in prose form, of the second and final part of the Germanic epic poem, Das Nibelungenlied. Many tales told and sung by minstrels a thousand years ago were assembled and first written in the 13th century and now-- in Revenge--- they are retold in the 21st. The lovely princess, Kriemhilt, whose husband, Sivrit the dragon slayer, was deceitfully murdered in part one of the tale, Staacks Love and Death, seeks her retribution in Revenge. Years have passed and Kriemhilt still mourns the loss of her husband. One day an emissary arrives in Burgondenlant, the nobleman, Reudiger, who has come on behalf of the powerful Etzel (Attila) the ruler of the Huns and a great empire which includes Burgondenlant. Etzels queen has died and he seeks the still strikingly beautiful Kriemhilt as his bride. Under Reudigers guidance and influence, she ultimately makes her way to Etzel. In due time she becomes a beloved and powerful queen of the Huns. Through it all, however, she has never forgotten her dead husband and her love for him remains undiminished. Her bitterness for the loss of Sivrit has gradually consumed her. Kriemhilt thinks of nothing but revenge. She tricks her brothers, the Burgonden kings, Gunther, Giselher and Gernot, along with the murdered, the terrifying, one eyed Hagene von Tronje into visiting Etzels palace. Thinking they are coming to Etzels land for a celebration, they soon learn that Kriemhilt has planned, not a festival, but a blood fest. In spite of being foretold their fate by mischievous river sirens, the Burgonden proceed to Etzels land and to their doom. They will show no fear in gripping their fate. Instead they will show valor and honor in bringing incredible harm to their enemies. Knightly codes of conduct turn friends into foes. In the end, Kriemhilt gets her revenge, but it is so short lived that it brings no joy to her bitter life. The dialog and interplay of the characters in this great classic show not only the way people lived in the 5th century, but how little people have changed. Staack has succeeded in delivering an interpretation that is readable, accessible and enjoyable for todays readers. This item ships from La Vergne,TN. Paperback. Bookseller Inventory # 9781449957377
