9781450232876: The Good Thief

Jerusalem, 33 A.D. It is the tumultuous final weeks before Passover. Excited pilgrims pour into the Holy City. Many hail a young rabbi preaching in the countryside as the promised Messiah. In the wilderness south of Jerusalem, two wealthy and influential brothers have been robbed and killed. Their murders spark an aggressive search by Roman authorities to find and punish those responsible. Returning home to announce his engagement, a young Jewish man discovers his brother and sister dead?innocent victims of the Roman officer leading the investigation. The surviving brother's obsession with revenge will take him from the back alleys of Jerusalem, to a thieves' den in the mountains of Judea, to a fateful encounter with the man he has sworn to kill. The journey will end with his crucifixion alongside Christ on Good Friday. Every Christian has heard of the Good Thief. This is his story.

From the Author:

"The Good Thief" is my first novel -- a book I literally felt inspired to write. It all started with a series of Bible Study programs at my church. But let me begin at the beginning...

I had recently "retired" as a full-time marketing and advertising copy writer in the marketing firm my wife and oldest son and I started after I took early retirement from IBM. I had worked in the corporate world for 25 years in various writing, press relations and management assignments. With more time on my hands, the Bible classes really appealed to me. Along the way, I became fascinated with the story of the "Good Thief" that Luke describes in the New Testament. Here was a man who in the last moments of his life recognizes that Christ is the Messiah, the Son of God. And Jesus, in his last agonizing moments, extends his mercy and promises the penitent thief eternal life. What an amazing moment! It was a story begging to be told, and I felt I was being invited by the Holy Spirit to be the one to tell it.

Many, I know, have seen the "Good Thief" as a hardened criminal who somehow had the grace and good fortune to ask for salvation. However, I felt inspired to take a different approach, envisioning his life as richer and more complex. As I wrote the story, I felt the scenes rise and flow, to play out before me like a movie. And, in fact, after it was published, a major Christian film company called me and optioned the book as a possible movie. Coincidence? I don't think so. I believe I was called to write this story --for whoever needs to hear the timeless message of God's love, forgiveness and offer of redemption.

In a similar fashion, I felt I needed to continue the story that began in "The Good Thief," and for that reason I've just published a second novel, "On the Road to Damascus." It follows the lives of many of the major characters introduced in "The Good Thief," in the weeks and months following Jesus' death and resurrection. This was a challenging time for the fledgling believers in the Way of Christ, a time before they were even known as Christians. It was a time marked by uncertainty, persecution and sacrifice. It is a story of love and faith shared by a Jewish artisan and the Roman centurion who cares for her -- a journey of discovery for both as they travel "On the Road to Damascus."

I hope you enjoy reading these works as much as I did creating them. Thank you so much!

-Barry Connolly, July 2013

About the Author:

I began my writing career as a newsletter editor for the IBM Corporation in Poughkeepsie, New York. For the next 25 years I held a succession of writing, editing and management positions in various communications fields -- feature writing, video production, speeches, news releases and the like. Actually, for most of my career at IBM I managed various press and media relations departments. So, it was not a great leap, when I eventually took early retirement, to start my own marketing communications company with my wife and oldest son (also a writer.) However, it was only recently that I've had the time to tackle creative writing, and I've enjoyed it a great deal. I only hope my readers enjoy it as much.

My wife and I grew up together on the same block in a small town on Long Island. We'll soon be married 50 years! Our two grown sons are married and we have three grandchildren.
