While vacationing in Italy with her teenage daughter, Nina Downing falls in love with the culture, the language, and with a fellow tourist who she soon finds out is a Catholic priest. After the trip, Nina returns to her husband in Chicago and the priest returns to his parish in Boston. Believing they will never see each other again, they fondly remember the fun they shared in romantic Italy - until a phone call changes everything. They are now placed in a precarious situation where they must each make a difficult choice. Despite the potential for losing her family, Nina attempts to justify the love she feels for two men, while seeking solace in the arms of both. The priest however, turns to alcohol to mitigate the guilt he feels deep inside his soul and begins his descent into an abyss from which he might never return.
