9781450742863: Second Strike

Ron P. Whittington's Second Strike captures the pathos of the country in the days after the terrorist strike through the eyes of Parker Glynn, a successful businessman who becomes an accidental spy in the fight against terrorism. Americans are gripped in fear and deep sadness in the aftermath of the attack, with images of the deaths of nearly 3,000 citizens and the destruction of the Twin Towers, the Pentagon and a scorched field in Pennsylvania seared into their psyche through the 24-hour news cycle. For Glynn, a corporate entrepreneur who lost his wife and daughter in the attack, it has brought a clash of emotions: tremendous sadness at his personal loss, guilt over his infidelity and the realization that his mistress had a hidden connection to the men who staged the dramatic terrorist assault. Glynn flees from New York City to escape his memories, traveling south also the east coast until he reaches northeast Florida. At the same time Adham Morqos, a Saudi who lost his own wife and child in an Israeli bomb blast years before, is leading a second strike terror cell on a murderous course through the Caribbean isles to the Florida coast. When Glynn inadvertently uncovers the cell's ingenious plot to kill thousands of young people, an attack that will prove no city is beyond Al-Qaeda s reach, fate offers him one final chance at revenge and redemption. The sequel to the novel, Doppelganged, was released in 2012.

Review:

Reviewer: Lee Scott It's shortly after 9/11, and another terrorist cell is preparing an attack on American soil. This time the target will be Jacksonville during the annual Florida-Georgia football game. First-time author R.P. Whittington has fashioned a fast-paced adventure story around a tragedy that has affected all our lives. By placing his novel in Jacksonville, he brings home the reality that we all could be victims of fanatical terrorists at any time. On the surface, this self-published novel has a satisfying plot. At times, it requires a major amount of suspension of disbelief. Despite its weaknesses, it is a true page-turner. --The Florida Times Union (July 4, 2010)

Reviewer: Jo Ann Holt Whittington s protagonist, Parker Glynn, is a thirty-something computer genius and entrepreneurial type who loses his wife and daughter in the collapse of the Twin Towers on 9/11. Set in the months immediately following September 11, Glynn tries to free himself from the survivor s guilt and depression he s suffered since the attack on the U.S. He becomes an unlikely hero who is instrumental in stopping a second deadly attack by terrorists. Of special interest to Best Southwest readers, protagonist Glynn is a 1983 graduate of Duncanville High School who later graduates from S.M.U. Second Strike is a gripping story, with likeable people and some really bad villains, and it kept me up two nights in a row until I finally finished reading it. The author says, On a secondary level, Parker Glynn personifies the U. S., how we reacted before and after 9/11. As for Parker Glynn s future, I hope we will see more of this Duncanville boy-makes-good in future novels. --Focus Daily News (Aug. 2, 2010)

Reviewer: Alison Trinidad Second Strike is a gripping read that hits close to home. Locals will especially like the references to long-time barhaunts like Gingers and Monkeys Uncle Tavern. Whittington weaves a fast-paced, engaging read. B +! --Jacksonville Magazine (July 2010)
