Michael Lane is a board certified infectious diseases physician who focuses on improving the safety and quality of healthcare. Dr. Lane is a Certified Professional in Patient Safety and has received certification in Just Culture and High Reliability Outcomes. He works at BJC HealthCare as an Outcomes Physician focusing on improving the quality and safety of healthcare in a large medical system. Dr. Lane was responsible for founding the Washington University School of Medicine Clinician Peer Support Program to provide support to clinicians after adverse events.

Description: Just as the title states, this is a book on patient safety and quality improvement. It also includes online access to an ebook that includes a bonus chapter and hyperlinks that enable readers to jump to a specific table/chart. 

Purpose: The purpose is to provide a broad overview of patient safety and quality improvement fundamentals, as well as direction for how these can be applied to clinical settings. These are most definitely worthy objectives. The online version would be helpful for use in the clinical setting, allowing users to access it on an iPad or tablet.
Audience: The audience is healthcare providers of all levels in a clinical setting; the book is not limited to one type of healthcare provider. It uses a multidisciplinary team approach in creating the title in acknowledgement of the fact that healthcare is a multidisciplinary team effort. Additional resources are listed at the ends of the chapters to allow for further exploration of a topic.
 
Features: This book contains a great deal of information on all areas of healthcare. The introductions to patient safety and quality improvement are a great way to start the book and enable readers to clearly understand the basis of the book. I especially liked the chapter on models for quality. One unique feature is the size, making it the perfect little book to carry around. Chapters are succinct and to the point. The best part of this book is the variety of topics it covers -- nothing seems to be missing. 

Assessment: The quality of this book is outstanding. There isn't a thing I would change or upgrade. Having both print and online versions is a huge advantage for users.
