Moon Pie is a fact-based story about a 52 year old black professor who retires in 1996 from a university in New Jersey and moves to Greenville, SC, the state he left when a child in the Fifties due to a terrible personal racial tragedy he does not wish to remember. In Greenville he is hired as a professor of literature at a prestigious formerly Southern Baptist university where he meets and eventually falls in love with Anna, a 19 year old white female student from Macon County, Georgia, whose father is is a fundamentalist far-right wing Baptist minister. The black professor and the white female student carry on a secretive and unethical steamy sexual relationship, and then Anna unexpectedly announces to the professor that she is pregnant. The student, Anna, believing in her father's love for her, his religion, and all the things he has said to her over the years about loving one's neighbor, etc., goes to her home in Macon County to tell her father about the situation and to confess her love for the black professor. As a result there is horror and extreme danger for the professor and for the student who both, despite age difference, color, and circumstances, really do love each other. An underlying question in the novel is: Just how deep can one scratch the surface of the "New" South before the racial awfulness, and especially the mixed sexuality taboo of the "Old" South is uncovered? Anna, in a sense, is the New South and her father the Old.
