How Important is it that We Model a Discipline Devotional Life for Our Children?

It is of Utmost Importance According to the Word of Scripture.

A PURITAN FAMILY DEVOTIONAL

...is a convenient resource in one book to aid the Christian believer to develop discipline in daily Bible readings and devotional and doctrinal meditations.

>>>What You'll Discover in This Volume:

A Puritan Catechism

  • Compiled by Charles Haddon Spurgeon in 1855, this portion contains 82 basic questions and answers of simple Biblical truth, made up from the Westminster Shorter Catechism and the Baptist Catechism, so that disciplined (not vain) repetitions and meditation upon those Biblical truths will aid in causing the truth to sink into the soul. This version has been updated in modern English and uses the New American Standard Bible where applicable.
Daily Bread
  • Systematically compiled by Robert Murray M'Cheyne in 1842 is a systematic Bible plan with scripture portions from the Bible to read daily in the morning and evening, for individuals and families, so that the Bible may be read completely through in the course of one year (the New Testament and Psalms twice, and the Old Testament once). Added to M'Cheyne's readings is an adjustment for leap years.
1689 London Baptist Confession of Faith
  • The Second London Baptist Confession contains 32 small chapters detailing, in systematic form, the theology of Bible truth. This version has been updated in modern English by Jon J. Cardwell and utilizes the New American Standard Bible wherever applicable.
Hymns and Psalms
  • This small volume contains seven select, well-known hymns followed by seven select psalms from the 1650 Scottish Psalter.
Devotional Suggestions
  • Suggestions for implementing some of the tools for individual and/or family devotions.

This is a great tool for any Christian desiring to grow in grace and be strengthened in faith; whether using the book as a family, or in private, individual meditations to exalt Christ unto the glory of God.

The disciplines you develop in daily devotions and meditations in God's Word will provide a wealthy inheritance for your children, and theirs, for many years to come.

From the Author:

When I was missionary in bush Alaska, I knew that if the Lord would have mercy upon His people, to bring revival in a cold and remote land, it would be by His grace alone according to His good pleasure. Man cannot manufacture revival; nor can he manipulate God in any way to bring revival to pass. Nevertheless, our Savior and Sovereign has ordained means by which He accomplishes His will, presenting His ways according to His Word. That being so, ministers of God were responsible, by God's grace, to employ those means to the fullest extent possible and permissible in order to exalt Christ and bestow upon God the greatest glory redeemed souls could offer.

Therefore, in Scammon Bay, I began piecing together what would soon become A Puritan Family Devotional. For those who were already in the congregation, kept by God's grace in His Word and on His way, it was necessary to encourage daily Bible readings in the home. Expositional and expository preaching and teaching is wonderful; but if it causes the congregation to be lulled into finding satisfaction in the study and meditation of God's Word only once or twice per week when it is preached from the pulpit, we have failed as pastors. The weekly exhortation from the pulpit alone will never afford the congregation the opportunities necessary to grow in grace and be strengthened in faith. Therefore, Daily Bread, the Bible reading plan of Robert Murray M'Cheyne, was made available to the congregation.

As God was saving souls by His grace, it was necessary for us to ensure that those Christ was saving knew what it was that we believed with regard to God's Word. Editing Charles Spurgeon's A Puritan Catechism in plain language for our beloved Yup'ik people was the next step.

Yet, as every believer matures at differing rates, and that, by God's grace, it was necessary to identify those whom God had raised, or those who He was raising, within that local congregation. These leaders should certainly have knowledge of orthodox Christianity that surpasses a mere familiarity of the Bible and essential salvation truth. Therefore, the Second London Baptist Confession of 1689 was edited in plain language for our congregation.

Circumstances, however, caused my family and me to have to leave our beloved Yup'ik people earlier than we had expected and we were not able to compile all that we were working on into a singular devotional volume... until now.

Having used these resources in our own family devotions for several years, and adding to each one of those elements some select metrical psalms and classic hymns, A Puritan Family Devotional is now available using scripture translations from five English versions: KJV, ASV, ESV, NASB, and NKJV.

The little paperback is not flashy. It contains nothing groundbreaking; nothing new under the sun. Nevertheless, within 116 pages, it contains a great deal of devotional encouragement in a size that's easy to carry along with your personal Bible. I not only use this little book personally in my own family devotions, but also encourage its use within the congregation I currently pastor.

About the Author:

Jon J. Cardwell is a wretched sinner saved by God's free and sovereign grace. He lives in Anniston, Alabama with his wife, Lisa, and his mother-in-law, Virginia. He is the pastor at Sovereign Grace Baptist Church in Anniston after having ministered as a missionary and as a missionary-pastor in the Philippines, California, and remote bush Alaska.

He is the author of the bestseller, CHRIST AND HIM CRUCIFIED and the CEO of Vayahiy Press. Jon has also held the office of vice-chairman of the national Sovereign Grace Baptist Fellowship (2009-11), and chairman (2011-2013).

His Christianity has been shaped tremendously and influenced deeply by such redeemed sinners as John Bunyan (1628-1688), Charles H. Spurgeon (1834-1892), John Newton (1725-1807), and Granville Gauldin (1929- ).

Jon spent several years in the Navy, most markedly as a U.S. Navy diver. He was medically discharged in 1993 after a decade and a half of service. He reached his highest paygrade, Chief Petty Officer (E-7), in 1989.

Some of Jon's other titles include: Lord, Teach Us to Pray; Fullness of the Time; A Pilgrim Family Devotional, A Puritan Bible Primer, Wilmer P. Cohen, Pearl Harbor and Custom Classic Cars.
