9781452065465: AmoRe Therapy: A Door to Understanding Hispanic Families

Xiomara Melo introduces AmoRe Therapy, a clinical intervention designed for the specific needs of Hispanics couples and families, utilizing Biblical concepts of marriage, this modality speaks straight to the basic emotional needs of love and respect of men and women, within a spiritual context that allows for greater safety and security of attachment to God as well as to each other. Additionally this model bridges the gap in research and clinical practice in working with families with a domestic violence history. Through the use of humor, story telling, and psychodrama techniques such as doubling, role reversal, touching, soliloquy, replay, and role playing, mirror, the author has worked with approximately 200 Hispanic couples in the last seven years. The most successful type of clients have been Hispanic couples with a history of domestic violence and trauma.

About the Author:

The author was born in the Dominican Republic in 1963. Her father, Americo Melo, had his import export business of coffee in Barahona until he passed away in 1992; her mother, Flerida still resides in Barahona. She left home at the age of sixteen to attend secondary school in Canada, United States and Switzerland. Her siblings and her, five in all, were loved children. Their parents taught them virtues such as compassion, courage, and perseverance. As an adult she takes these traits of character seriously because she was raised under the moral power of quiet example. Her father was known as the "father of the poor" his acts of charity were so many and so diverse that the children did not know of many of them until he died and many among the multitude of mourners at his funeral told them of his deeds. She moved to Miami, Florida, in 1985 to attend college and got married in 1987, had two lovely children, Michael and Melissa. Always a very serious student, She graduated high school with National Honors Society Status. She graduated from North Carolina State University with a Psychology major Summa Cum Lauder. She continued her graduate studies at UNC-Chapel Hill and obtained her MSW in 2003. She loves the Lord Jesus and praises Him for allowing her to raise loving and respectful children known by their honorable character. It seems that in every place she resided so far somehow she has become known as the person to visit when problems arise; her friends and family will attest that there is a well treat path to her parlor of friends and acquaintances seeking advise and comfort from life's dips and troughs. Perhaps it is simply because she has a genuine interest in people and in trying to mitigate their suffering.
