Growing up in a household where my father was a pharmacist and my mother was a registered nurse was a great education for me. It planted me firmly in the path of being an herbalist and has helped me as I teach people to integrate natural medicines with other therapies.
My Dad became a pharmacist because of his love for plants, chemistry, and experimenting. He regaled us with stories as we grew up of his adventures as a boy in the 1940s and 50s, telling us tales of woodland forts, electricity in backyard tents, and mini-explosions from chemicals stirred together in the depths of the forest. He and his childhood friends loved to explore and discover--precisely the characteristics of a good herbalist.
My Mom has specialized in hand-surgery her whole career and has always impressed me with a deep reverence for and fascination with anatomy and physiology. Both my parents instilled in me a desire to learn more, to educate myself, and to move forward in life with an open mind.
This book, The Authentic Herbal Healer, explores the chemistry of rosemary (and 130 more plants from around the world), the therapy of gardening, and the importance of family. If you are intrigued by the art and science of herbal medicine and want to use herbs to be healthier and maintain a more natural lifestyle, this book is an excellent reference. At 412 pages, it is brimming with guidance for combining herbs and is backed by up-to-date clinical research.
Organized by body system, The Authentic Herbal Healer also includes a section on wild foods foraging and wild edibles, a complete materia medica, a thorough bibliography and index, and detailed possible formulas for a wide variety of illness, health issues, and life stages.
As always, the science and the art go hand-in-hand; the book is a balance between respectful awe of the natural world (both our bodies and the plants) and common sense approaches to healing that are supported by modern research as well as hundreds of years of empirical evidence and tradition.
It is written to be a supportive text and go-to reference for nurses, midwives, doctors, healing arts practitioners, and anyone interested in applying natural botanical remedies for better health.
