From the Author:

Like many of our WWII heroes, my father, Thomas J. Flynn, was a humble man who rarely spoke of his time in combat or as a Nazi POW. He preferred instead to focus on his family, his Veterinary practice, the volunteer fire department and his passion for hunting, fishing and trapping in the southwest Iowa community of Kimballton that this New Yorker had adopted as his own after the war.

Often times when my siblings and I would ask questions about the war, my father kept his answers short and made it clear it was a subject that he did not want to talk about.  Yet he proudly displayed his Captain Bars, Purple Heart, Bronze Star, POW Medal, unit badges and other combat medals in a framed display on the wall for all to see when they entered our home.  Our father passed away in 1993 taking most his stories with him, or so we thought.

With the birth of my first grandson, I was inspired to put together a short story about his great grandfather to share with him one day.  However, the journey this research project would take me on was beyond my wildest expectations. After receiving my father's VA file, I was armed with the key pieces of information I needed to unlock the door to his military career and Google's search engine became my best friend as I uncovered the 65 year old mystery. What I discovered was my father was the senior surviving officer of K Company and his post war interviews upon liberation from the POW camps have been used as the foundation for multiple books that recounted the events that happened in Hosingen and are part of the National Archives WWII records.

What I had hoped to be at least ten pages of general information, turned into a 358 page book, titled Unforgettable; The Biography of Capt. Thomas J. Flynn, which is detailed analysis of my father's life, especially his unit's key role in the Battle of the Bulge and his time as a POW.

To summarize the battle inside the bulge:
Ordered by General Middleton to "hold at all costs", 300 Americans from K Company and Company B, 103rd Eng Battalion and five tanks held out for 2 ½ days against up to 5000 Germans, 18 tanks and several massive artillery bombardments to become the last town held by American forces inside the "bulge". Out of ammunition, food, water, most of the buildings reduce to rubble, and surrounded by thousands of German, they were finally forced to surrender. This delay ultimately allowed other units to arrive at and defend Bastogne, 18 miles away. Amazingly, only seven Americans were killed and ten wounded compared to 300 Germans killed and an estimated 2,000 wounded.

In Part II of the book, Tom returns to civilian life with his young wife, Anna, finishes college at Iowa State on the GI Bill and becomes a veterinarian in Anna's hometown, Kimballton, where he tried to overcome the memories of war and imprisonment and move on with his life. Raising a family of eight children, the next forty years are packed with humorous, entertaining and touching stories of a humble man who touched the hearts of everyone he knew.

My hope is my book inspires others to see what they can find out about that special veteran in their life as I included a detailed appendix in my book that covers my research process and provides a number of ideas that most anyone will find helpful.

From the Back Cover:

After 65 years, author Alice Flynn, uncovers the story of her father's role in WWII's Battle of the Bulge and the challenges and dangers he faced as a POW in the Nazi POW camps. This book follows Tom's journey through life from his childhood growing up on East End Avenue in New York  City during the Great Depression, through the battle fields of Western Europe with the 28th Infantry Division in late 1944 and Nazi POW camps of World War II, to his escape when the war ended to a simple life in a small, southwest Iowa town with Anna, the love of his life.

Alice Flynn has recorded the life of her father, of which his early years through his experiences as a soldier in World War II were of particular interest to me. An outstanding job in historical research covering both his combat time as well as his life as a Prisoner of War. A truly fascinating story.
- Robert Phillips, Author, Historian, and WWII Battle of the Bulge veteran

Alice Flynn has done a remarkable job of historical inquiry and personal biography. Through excellent writing and careful research, she succeeds in bringing her father, Thomas Flynn, to life. I never had the opportunity to meet Thomas but, as I read the book, I came to feel as if I had known him for years. This book is well researched and very engaging, an intimate portrait that stands as an example of how biographies should be written.
- John C. McManus, Author and University of Missouri History professor
