9781453686942: Lottie's Diary

Anyone who enjoys reading regional Iowa history, genealogies, or richly detailed chronicles of the nineteenth century will enjoy reading "Lottie's Diary." For more than a century, the diary of 19-year-old Lottie Wetmore lay forgotten in a file cabinet. The record of Lottie's trip to the 1893 Chicago World's Fair and daily life on the family farm was almost lost forever. But now in this publication, the past has been brought back to life once more. Nearby towns of Rock Branch, Kingsley, Moville, Pierson, and Correctionville were bustling with shopping, sports, travel, and cultural events that have since dwindled. Lottie's journey of faith is also recorded, as she struggled with the question of whether she could trust God. In addition, this publication contains a history of the Wetmore family in America, starting with John Whitmore, who arrived in the Puritan colony of Connecticut in 1635. Let Lottie's Diary guide you back to the world of small town Iowa in the 1890s.

About the Author:

Lottie Wetmore (1874-1895) was born on a farm near Rock Branch, Iowa, the oldest of George and Ida Wetmore's six children. Two of her siblings played important roles in Sioux City history in the early part of the twentieth century. Her brother, Harry A. Wetmore, was a successful businessman, race car driver, inventor. He sold Chalmers cars and to promote them, competed at the Interstate Raceway in North Sioux City, one of the best known tracks in the Midwest at the time. Wetmore raced against many of the era's best known drivers, including Eddie Rickenbacker, who later became a World War I flying ace. Wetmore invented a flexible harrow, and designed the Wetmore tractor, which set speed records in plowing contests in the 1920s. Lottie's sister, Rae Wetmore, was a publisher, co-owner of the Wetmore Declamation Bureau. She was also the first woman appointed to the Morningside College Board of Directors, and through her giving, set up the Rae Wetmore Scholarship program at the college. Lottie also had the potential for great achievements, but unfortunately died of tuberculosis just before she turned 21. The last two years of her life, she wrote a diary which chronicled the events and places she experienced.
