Shareefah Nadir-Mason, M.A., has been a Social Studies teacher for 5 years, at an urban middle school in Dallas ISD. She holds a Bachelor's Degree in Government and a Master's Degree in Organizational Management as well as a 4-8 Social Studies certification. She evacuated to Dallas, Texas after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina destroyed her hometown of New Orleans, Louisiana. Hailing from an urban school system that has historically ranked low in comparison with the other 49 states, motivated her to attend and complete college. After graduation, she decided that her time would be best spent designing programs that would increase the success rate of urban teachers. In her classroom, she has utilized successful techniques, which have subsequently aided in creating a burgeoning career for herself. During her career she has been named Teacher of the Year 2010. She has served as the Social Studies Department Chair the last 3 years. She has had an annual student passage rate of 93% on the TAKS standardized tests. She teaches writing, dance and theatre arts in the Junior Players after-school program. She heads and serves on countless other committees throughout the school. She is also a DISD Master Teacher. Her experiences teaching in the 9th largest urban district in the country, Dallas ISD, motivated her to write the book If I Can Make It Here, I Can Make It Anywhere! The Survival Guide for Teachers in Urban Schools. She understands that if teachers receive empowering and fundamental professional development before they enter the doors of urban schools they will be better prepared to handle the issues that arise. Nadir-Mason is co-founder of the educational consulting group Mavis & Co. She and partner Marcie Davis, have created workshops to ignite the fire in teachers who have answered the calling of teaching. She is married and has two beautiful daughters, so her investment in education is firm and incessant. She realizes that there is a clear and imminent problem in the professional development of teachers, especially those in an urban setting. She believes that her books and other tools will help teachers to become successful in classrooms all across the country!
