Looking back we see a panoramic view of the hills & prairies of northeastern Montana filling with immigrants & refugees from one end of Europe to the other. The promise of free land drew many and a measure of success drew still more. They scratched out a living as best they could, but the high price of "free" land -- frigid winters, parched summers, dust, loneliness, hunger -- killed thousands, & scattered still more to the winds. Looking back again we see the survivors, the fruit of their labors, and their legacy. The pioneers who "stuck it out" raised children with a tolerance for the often harsh environment and, nonetheless, an appreciation of the advantages of rural life. Through the eyes of dozens, Solberg paints a vivid picture of life on the prairies of northeastern Montana.

About the Author:

Eva Hallam Solberg (now Eva Solberg Bruckner) was born in Hinsdale, Montana to homesteaders Orval Keene & Nellie Dolson Hallam. The youngest of five children, she lived with her family on farms in Thoeny, Coburg, & Dodson in Valley, Blaine & Phillips counties. After graduating with the Kalispell High School class of 1950, Eva worked at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota for 20 months before returning to Montana where she attended Montana State College in Bozeman. In 1953 she married Ingwald Solberg. They purchased the homestead of Emil & Florence Akerlund in the Harb community about 30 miles southeast of Malta. During her 36 years on the wheat farm / cattle ranch, Eva also worked as a school bus driver, a photographer & reporter for the Phillips County News (1978-82), and manager of the Country Home assisted living facility (1982-89). Most of "Looking Back: Life Stories from the Prairies of Montana" are stories she wrote for the PCN, whose current owner, Curtis Starr, graciously allowed to have re-printed here. In 1989 Eva moved to the Los Angeles area where she worked as an administrative secretary at the Narramore Christian Foundation. Upon retiring from NCF in 2003, she moved back home to Phillips County & today lives in Malta. Eva & Ingwald raised five children who are spread across all four time zones in the continental US; Vivian & Orvin live in the Malta area, Denise in Louisiana, Evelyn ("Evie") in Washington & Marvin in Maryland. As a free-lance writer, Eva continues to submit stories occasionally for the PCN, does care-giving, & volunteers at the Elim Lutheran Brethren Church which she joined in the early 1960's.
