Alvin Sandler is an artist according to the strict definition of Albrecht Dürer: "One who can represent anything that he sees, or can imagine." In this his new book, he shares insights into drawing, gained from a half century of study and experience as a painter, printmaker, sculptor, and designer. Upon his return from Mexico, at age 20, Sandler had his first solo show in New York City. Exhibitions and honors followed, including awards from the National Academy of Design, and the Nation Arts club, 2 solo shows at the Hudson River Museum, Yonkers, N.Y., Long Island University, and New York University. His color etchings, published by The New York Graphic Society, and Original Print Collectors, LTD. have received numerous national and regional awards. His work is represented in private, public, and corporate collections. His triptych mural "The American Passion" is in The Schomberg Collection, New York Public Library. After dividing several years between Ajijic, Mexico and Manhattan, in 1981 Sandler chose to move to Bisbee, Arizona, where he has lived with his wife, artist Katherine Hagstrum, for the past thirty years, years filled with the beauty of the Southwest landscape, with new adventures in art, with new paintings, drawings, etchings, monotypes, and more recently, sculpture, and a book of "Picture Poems". In 2011 he hopes to publish a book of new "Poems with Pictures". Since moving to Bisbee, he has exhibited in Tucson, Phoenix, Scottsdale, Santa Fe, Douglas, Wilcox, and Bisbee. He has won many prizes in the region, including a solo exhibition at the Shemer Museum, Phoenix. His last entries won first prizes in Landscape, Still Life, Western, and Portrait categories, in the South East Arizona Artists Association competition. Sandler is a graduate of New York's High School of Music and Art. He studied drawing at the Art Students' League and printmaking at Pratt Graphics Center. Upon graduating M&A, he furthered his studies at the Instituto de Bellas Arts, Mexico, and with engraver Leopoldo Mendez, and muralist Pablo O'Higgens.
