From the Inside Flap:

Mobile, dotted with quaint Gulf Coast cottages, grand public structures, and elegant mansions, is the only seaport city in Alabama. Traces of the city's rich history can be found in its architecture. Whether featuring full-length French doors, which were popular in the 1850s, or gabled dormers with wide turrets from the 1890s, each of the included sixty-six buildings has become a significant part of Mobile's aesthetic beauty.

Radiant images of Southern architecture from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries accompany historical anecdotes and interesting tidbits. Many of the structures profiled are associated with famous Confederate characters as well as mystic societies, the National Society of the Colonial Dames in the State of Alabama, the Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Historic Mobile Preservation Society. From Italianate and Greek Revival to Carpenter Gothic and Romanesque, the city's diverse architectural influences make the perfect coffee-table book.

Jim Fraiser is the author of fourteen books about the history, architecture, and culture of the Deep South, including The Majesty of the Mississippi Delta, The Majesty of Eastern Mississippi and the Coast, Mississippi River Country Tales: A Celebration of 500 Years of Deep South History, and Vanished Mississippi Gulf Coast, all published by Pelican. He is a federal administrative law judge, adjunct law professor, and regular contributing book reviewer to numerous Deep South magazines and newspapers. He resides in Madison, Mississippi.

Pat Caldwell, a partner in the law firm Riley, Caldwell, Cork & Alvis, P.A., has served as general counsel of BancorpSouth, Inc., BancorpSouth Bank, and its respective subsidiaries. He is a Taylor Medalist and past president of the Lee County Young Lawyers Association and was a Mid-South Super Lawyer for 2010 and 2011. He lives in Tupelo, Mississippi.

An expert on Mobile history, John Sledge is an architectural historian for the Mobile Historic Development Commission. A past president of the Historic Mobile Preservation Society, he founded Church Street Graveyard Preservation Foundation, Inc. Sledge is on the board of the Friends of Magnolia Cemetery and has received many awards for his writing and historical contributions. He is the books editor for the Mobile Press-Register and has published books, articles, essays, and encyclopedia entries about the Deep South. He and his wife reside in Fairhope, Alabama.

Book Description Pelican Publishing Company, 2012. Hardback. Book Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book. An important part of Mobile history lies in the foundations of its realty. Each of the city s 1800s structures has a story to tell and all are included in this collection of more than sixty profiles. Enhancing each building s character are additions, renovations, and residents personalities. The addition of Lewis Carroll s (the author of Alice in Wonderland) iron gates to a cotton broker s 1859 mixed-style brick townhouse or the eastern side-parlors constructed on the 1868 Revival-style cottage after it was sold to a schooner captain are only a few of the transformations that give Mobile s older homes such specific personalities. Descriptions of these architectural treasures are grouped by geographic districts and are accompanied by color photographs. The Bishop Portier House with its Box Grand Piano and spiral stairway is listed under the Church Street East Historic District and is open to the public. The Greek Revival-style raised cottage known as Stewartfield lies in the Spring Hill Neighborhood with a history that dates back to 1850. Close-ups of decorative details, such as the stone gargoyles and dragons of Sacred Heart Chapel, and a Queen Anne-style bow porch from Monterey Place, provide a more intimate view of some chosen locations.
