As an enabler, we all too often see ourselves as the hero. And it is easy to see why, as we are always there to recuse the person with addiction, we are the rescuer, the helper and in many ways more dangerous than the addict or the addiction itself. We do not see that the reason many people with an addiction do not seek help is because we are there when they are about to fall or even after they fall. We bail them out of jail because they say ”I will go to meetings” “I have learned my lesson” I apologize for all the times I … as I have learned my lesson.” And as the hero we take credit and it is a false ceiling that we do not see until we find our own personal lives in turmoil.
