FEROL ARCE, 9th Degree Black Belt, has practiced and studied the martial arts since 1973. His disciplines include Karate, Ju-Jitsu and weapons. Since 1974 he has concentrated his focus on the Wado Ki Kai style created in 1974 by the late John Pereira, Sensei Arce’s good friend and teacher. Born and raised in San Francisco, Arce started his athletic career in baseball, playing for Dante Benedetti. In 1973, he switched to the pursuit of the art of karate following a knee injury that prevented him from playing baseball. Arce obtained his Shodan, or First Degree Black Belt at age 28 in 1978 from Sensei Pereira. Arce he knew early on that he would not only pursue his martial arts studies but that he also eventually wanted to teach others martial arts as his way of giving back to the Art. Encouraged by Sensei Pereira, Arce continued his Wado Ki Kai training and eventually opened his own dojo, or school, in 1980. He started with just 10 students at the Woman’s YWCA in Berkeley, California. By 2006 he had trained thousands of students, awarding Shodan degrees to nearly one hundred, and has promoted three to 5th Dan who are teaching WKK Karate and have their own schools in the Bay Area. Arce is currently the head Karate instructor at Mariner Square Athletic Club in Alameda, California, where he has been teaching for over 15 years, and offers classes to students of all levels and backgrounds. A frequent participant in tournaments in his early days, Arce has won in kata, weapons and kumite, weapons being his strongest. He won Grand Champion in the California Karate Championships (CKC) in 1984, at the time one of the most well-known tournaments held in California by Great Grand Master Ralph Castro. Arce is a member of several major martial arts associations, including American Teacher’s Association for the Martial Arts (ATAMA) and The International Society of Okinawan/Japanese Karate-Do (ISOK). In 2001, ATAMA awarded him the prestigious title of Master and presented him with the ceremonial red and white striped belt at the age of 51. Arce keeps alive the philosophy of Wado Ki Kai, which means “To Learn From All Things” by sponsoring annual workouts open to other schools and martial arts styles. In 1995 Arce trademarked the Wado Ki Kai logo. PATRICK McDERMOTT has a BA in Economics from Sacramento State and a Masters of Science in Information Systems from the University of San Francisco. He saw combat as an infantry sergeant in Vietnam.
