The Cosmetic Chemicals Guide is a reference book to help consumers understand about the harmful chemicals used in most cosmetics and personal care products.

Most bath, baby and personal care products contain ingredients that are linked to health conditions like eczema, hormonal disruption and cancer. Consumers try to shop for safe products but reading labels is confusing and some harmful ingredients may not even appear on the product labels.

This book is designed to help consumers understand what other names chemicals may go under, which chemical ingredients are likely to be contaminated and how they can find safer products. It also helps consumers learn more and tap into databases for further information.

From the Author:

I wrote this book after receiving many questions from my customers. Some common questions were " How can I tell what's actually IN the product?" and "How do I know which ingredients are harmful?"

In the past two years I have written many health and wellness articles and had a good list of chemicals to avoid when buying personal care products. My challenge with this book, was keeping that list down to a reasonable size and focusing on the most common chemicals consumers are exposed to.

The book was designed to be a quick-reference guide that consumers could look back on and find the answers they were looking for. I still flip through the book for information from time to time; especially when I'm looking for alternate names for ingredients.

Researching these chemicals did leave me a little shocked as to how obvious it is that they are a health concern. My confidence in the FDA and Health Canada is a little low, seeing how so many products are put on the market without requiring testing and if something is found to be not acceptable, there isn't a big legal consequence awaiting manufacturers.

My hope is that you benefit from reading this guide and be able to read labels with more confidence. For the long-run, I really hope our future generations learn all they can about unsafe chemicals and put the pressure on manufacturers to stop using these ingredients. Advocates for more "natural" ingredients have pressured companies like P&G Gamble and have forced changes to the concentrations of chemicals that are used in products - so anything is possible!

From the Back Cover:

When you are shopping for non-toxic products remember a few simple guidelines:

  • Be wary of anything that says "Natural", "Organic", "Botanicals", or "Essential Oils"
  • Write down ingredient names to look them up when you get home
  • Keep a wallet-size print out or a copy of this book in your purse for quick reference
  • Look for warnings such as "Keep Away From Children" "Use With Adult Supervision" or "Apply Liberally" as these warnings are often not put there because the manufacturer wants you to be safe! Often, they are there because an ingredient is present that warrants the health warning by law.
  • Check every label - even if it's from a manufacturer you trust. Many manufacturers have some products that are 100% non-toxic but yet, they still produce others that contain chemicals
Non-toxic products often cost more than commercial chemical-infused brands but remember two things:

  1. They shouldn't cost 3x as much as regular products (some stores 'price gouge' for the going green trend)
  2. Many non-toxic products last a long time and really do adhere to the saying " A little goes a LONG way!"
And of course, remember that paying a little more is worth it in the effort to encourage better health. If you or your children suffer from eczema, skin rashes or allergies, you'll be pleasantly surprised to see just how quickly these conditions clear up once you've eliminated the harmful toxins in your everyday products!
