Meena, a fifteen-year-old Afghan girl, lives with her family in Kabul. Life is good until the Taliban takes over and, “overnight, everything vanished." Her parents lose their jobs, and Meena loses her freedom to attend school, to walk outside, and even to show her face. Inside her own home she is afraid to speak freely because her uncle is One of Them. The tale is told in ninety-nine prose poems.
