CHRISTINE FORSYTH is a Toronto-based writer and graphic designer. She is the author of several novels in the Lorimer Sports Stories series. Power Hitter and Katie's Midnight Ride are Canadian Children's Book Centre "Our Choice" selections. She is also the author of the Lorimer SideStreets YA novel Adrenaline High. From School Library Journal:
Grade 4-6-These novels use sports as the framework for stories about families in crisis. In Shooting Star, eighth-grader Quyen Ha joins a local Bantam League basketball team in Ottawa and learns to deal with racial bias as she and her sister wait for their parents to reveal what is troubling them. There is good detail about Vietnamese family life and about basketball. In Power Hitter, Connor Wells, 13, is sent to Winnipeg to live with baseball-crazed relatives for the summer without being told that his parents have divorced and his mother is coping with chemotherapy. Connor discovers a hidden talent-he can really hit a ball. While the story is a little contrived, humorous events balance out some of the weaknesses. At first, the boy isn't supposed to know much about the game, yet he uses baseball terminology in conversation. These fast-paced stories will keep readers interested, particularly Matt Christopher's many fans.
