Judith Laikin Elkin has been credited with creating a new field of scholarship, Latin American Jewish Studies. This book traces her paths from childhood in Jewish Detroit to the United States Foreign Service in Asia and Europe, to scholarly research in South America, and the founding of LAJSA, an academic association with members in more than 20 countries. Her experiences as vice consul at the American Embassy in London, as a lone traveler in Spain and at the ruins of Machu Picchu, teaching at American universities at home and abroad, are described with humor, enthusiasm, and relevance for today's world. Educated in Detroit Public Schools and the Farband Folk Shule, Judith earned a BA in English, MA in International Affairs, and while raising two daughters returned to the University of Michigan to earn a Ph.D. in history. She is the author of Krishna Smiled: Assignment in South Asia; The Great Lakes Colleges Association; and The Jews of Latin America, the foundational text for this subject. She has taught history and political science at Wayne State University, Albion College, Ohio State University, and The University of Michigan, where she is presently associated with the Frankel Center for Judaic Studies in Ann Arbor.

From the Author:

Walking Made My Path is an anecdotal retelling of my life and times, which included five years as a United States Foreign Service Officer, (see Krishna Smiled: Assignment in Southeast Asia, Wayne State University Press) and a stint as an administrator in higher education (see The Great Lakes Colleges Association, GLCA). The project that absorbed the latter half of my professional life is the subject of my major work, The Jews of Latin America. Having gone through several editions, the most recent edition is due out in early  2014 (Lynne Reinner Publisher). Researchers and scholars in the field will also want to see two books that I co-edited with colleagues, The Jewish Presence in Latin America, with Gilbert X. Merkx(Allen & Unwin), and Latin American Jewish Studies: An Annotated Guide to the Literature, with Ana Lya Sater (Greenwood Press).

About the Author:

Diplomat, historian, professor, journalist, mother, Judith Laikin Elkin made her way through the religious and gender battles of twentieth century America, emerging with her humor and her honor intact. Her story enhances our understanding of the social and political currents that run beneath history as usually written.
