For a young man fresh out of the military in post-World War II Australia, life is hard and uncertain. Seumas, an unworldly young man, does what he can to survive and struggles to find hope for the future. When he meets Narelle, a young, embittered prostitute, he finds himself strangely and powerfully attracted to her-and his interest is enthusiastically returned. Set against a gritty background in Sydney in the 1950s and beyond, their romance is a poignant one, as the two struggle to find a way to make their dreams come true amid the proliferation of widespread and illegal gambling. But when their fantasy is ruptured by the many difficulties they face, Seumas finds that he can't handle it. He runs away to Australia's tropical north and finds work as a stockman on a large cattle run. His new life forces him to grow up quickly, but even his budding maturity and perspective can't erase Narelle from his dreams. The long, lonesome hours on the range inspire his imagination, and he finds himself wondering what might happen if he returned to Sydney-and her arms. Far away in the city, Narelle faces a similar challenge. Try as she might, she can't get on with her life without Seumas, and her grief forces her to grow up a bit too quickly as well. Theirs is an uplifting, unforgettable, and very poignant romance set in a stunningly beautiful, wild, and unforgiving land and in a time long past.

From the Author:

I guess what motivated me to write A Very Different Girl was that my kids knew virtually nothing about the Australia in which I grew up. Indeed, when I returned to Sydney, aged twenty, it was a very different Sydney to what it is now. Looking back, three things stand out in my memory. Firstly, there was a large and continuing influx of single, male migrants. They were required to sustain Australia's booming, post World War 2 economy. Secondly, as would be expected, prostitution flourished. And thirdly, illegal bookmakers proliferated--there were no legal betting shops. Today, legal betting shops are abundant and their clients can bet on the gallops, trots and greyhound racing etc.
Back then, I was determined to get a well paid job, which would enable me to purchase an apartment sooner rather that later. So I took a job as "penciller" with a large and well known illegal bookmaker. It paid handsomely. His premises were located in Sydney's most notorious red-light district. And, yes, I did get to know some of the prostitutes that worked there. But what that taught me was that they were just people who were trying to make a living as best they could in order to pay the rent, feed and clothe their kids, live the high life, pay their university fees or just work three or four nights per week etc etc.

From the Back Cover:

Sensibly, Seumas kept Lawson's right hand within his peripheral vision. He knew that the foreman would throw a punch given the slightest provocation. Indeed he'd watched the man angrily swing a right cross that'd depressed an apprentice jockey's left cheekbone. Lawson stood over six feet and weighed fourteen stone, while the young apprentice was about five feet and was lucky if he weighed seven stone, even after a good feed. Seumas doubted that Lawson would hit him while he remained seated...
"And to think I kept this job for you, while you were off doin' national service. And pretendin' to be a bloody airman!" Lawson yelled, his face mottled with rage...
Seumas knew that if he opened his mouth it'd only further enrage the foreman. Experience had taught him that staying silent was the best way to ensure that Lawson's violent temper would gradually subside as it ran out of steam...
"You're an ungrateful bastard, McKinnon. An' I reckon you've only been havin' a lend of us, all along. You're a bloody mongrel all right."
Seumas said nothing. He kept his eyes downcast and fixed on his boots, which, he idly noted, could do with a good polish.
