So, what is the premise of this book? Are we getting the "real deal" in our lives, or are we taking a "sugar pill" and just getting by? We spend our lives creating the "placebo" of who we really are. We think we are defined by our jobs, our relationships, our looks, our money (or lack of it). We bank everything on what we think is important and then one day, one or more of those things goes away or the thing we are doing just doesn't work anymore. We focus our thoughts on something to the exclusion of everything else. We find ourselves up at 3:00am worrying about stuff that didn't exist one year ago and probably won't even cross our minds a year from now. We expend a whole lot of energy getting really upset at someone who cuts us off on the freeway, and then they are gone. We get excited about a new person, place, or thing in our lives, and two weeks later, we are saying something like, "That didn't work out", or, "That wasn't a good deal for me". Then all of a sudden, we wake up to the realization that there has to be a better way. -Beverly Lieb, C.Ht.
