9781462682232: Wishing on a Star - My Journey Across the Gender Divide

Rachael Evelyn Booth shares her story of what it's like to grow up in a male body, struggling her whole life trying to fit into what society said she was supposed to be. From early childhood she could never understand why people kept insisting that she was a boy and waited for the "magic" change that would make change her into the girl she knew she was.  With growing age came the heartrending realization that she wasn't going to change and she turned her attention to trying to somehow fit into society as a woman living in a man's body and never, ever letting anyone know about her inner struggle.

The book follows her attempts to fit in by doing things like joining the Navy,  getting married, and having children, with nothing really working, finally resigning herself to just trying to make it to the next day without ending her suffering herself.  It is a story of pain, of despair, of hope and of eventual triumph meant to not only help those going through the silent hell of the transgender condition, but to help others to understand and learn to accept their transgender family member, friend, or someone they encounter struggling with the condition.

This is a heartbreaking yet heartwarming story and told with total honesty and great humor, creating a riveting book that you won't be able to put down.

Product Description:

Rachael Evelyn Booth shares her story of childhood male and struggling her whole life trying to fit into what society said she was supposed to be. From her trials growing up through her time in the Navy and her marriages and children, her heartbreaking yet heartwarming story is told with total honesty and great humor, creating a book that you won't be able to put down.

From the Author:

This book took me 12 years to write because it brought up some horrible memories that I thought were long since buried and forgotten.  It was quite cathartic to write though, as I was able to come to terms with most of those bad memories and look at a lot of my past life that I'd seen through a child's eyes as enormously funny. The book was also written for the express purpose of showing other transgender people who are living each day just surviving to see the next day that their dreams of unity of mind and body CAN actually happen no matter how impossible it seems.  I also wanted to write something that would let the person's family, friends, and the public in general understand just what it means to be transgendered.  Trying to explain what it's like to have the body of one gender and the mind of another is like trying to explain colors to a person who's been blind from birth.  There just isn't any real frame of reference to rely on.  With this book I hope to provide that understanding.
