The Raymond Tinsley Story focuses on the social and emotional problems of at-risk and troubled adolescents growing up and attending inner-city schools. The Tinsley series provides solutions to many of these problems. Some of the problems fall into these categories: Peer pressure-Conflict with parents-Gang influence and affiliation-Bullying-Alcohol and Drugs-Crime-Guns-Sexually Transmitted Diseases-Education and Teen Pregnancy. This book provides workbook activities to help students improve reading skills and assists students in applying the skills needed to pass standardized and national tests. The Tinsley series is divided into short chapters that can be easily read and understood. The chapters are divided into five units. Each unit follows a logical plan to improve comprehension, vocabulary, writing and test taking skills. Each chapter ends with an adventure and creates anticipation of reading the next chapter. These chapters immediately captures the attention of readers and leaves them curious as to how the main character, Raymond, will prepare himself psychologically for the championship game, knowing his coach was wounded in a drive-by shooting, and he assumes the leadership of player-coach in tomorrow’s championship game. How will he go up against Benny D., the psychotic drug dealer who is out to sabotage the game? Some of the action chapters in Unit 1 include: *A drive-by shooting at the school. *A fight between three rival cheer leaders from Carver High School. and two cheer leaders from Martin Luther King High School. *Raymond’s stepfather is mugged by a drug dealer who is frantically trying to sabotage the championship game. Prologue At first, it was difficult for Raymond to understand why the drive-by shooting happened the day before the championship game. Was this just another random shooting between rival gangs intended to hurt innocent students, or was it a ploy to throw Martin Luther King High School Basketball team off of their game? There were a lot of questions to be answered before the team could “psych” itself up to the level of play needed to win the championship game. This is the story of Raymond Tinsley, star center for Martin Luther King High School’s Basketball Team. Raymond has to walk through the pitfalls of drugs, teen violence, peer pressure, gang banging and social problems in the community before fulfilling his dreams of playing ball in college and becoming a superstar in the NBA. His greatest dream was to return to the community after college and help adolescents like himself fulfill their dreams. The Raymond Tinsley story realistically portrays the lifestyle of adolescents’ transition from elementary to middle school or junior high, and then a second transition to high school. These transitions bring many risks and opportunities to make decisions—for better or worse. Unfortunately, the worse decisions could prove to be fatal when they result in gang banging and similar reactions. The Raymond Tinsley story is a timely story and will help adolescents think through decisions and choices they must make during this crucial time in their lives.
