9781463779764: Riding the Asian Dragon: Extraordinary Lives of Ordinary People

Smart, funny, and filled with a clever gypsy’s wanderlust, Riding the Asian Dragon: Extraordinary Lives of Ordinary People by Frenchwoman Isabelle Boulet is a fascinating memoir that shares the author’s experience backpacking solo across Asia. A yearlong sojourn that proved transformative, this travelogue reflects on the Far East’s traditions, customs, ethnic groups, politics, marriage, spirituality, beliefs, and economic disparities. With waylays in China, Tibet, Mongolia, Nepal, India, Cambodia, and Laos, readers will enjoy an intimate look at how the locals live and love.

It helps that Boulet is an experienced equestrian—and that she could use her dressage skills and knowhow as an icebreaker to befriend the nomads of Tibet and Mongolia. Even more inviting, is her ability to finesse words and language to breathe new life into the travel-writing genre. For her, capturing the essence of a destination is to capture its people. Truly, this memoir is a literary diorama of the men, women, and children the author met along the way.

From the Back Cover:

I was free to pick up my bag and set off on my round-the-world journey, first to South America for one month, then onto Asia, the pièce de résistance of my sabbatical year. I have never visited a country that I did not like, but Asia always held the greatest fascination for me, simply because its culture is as far removed from ours as can be. In return, Asia has rewarded me with the most enriching experiences and the adventures of a lifetime. Setting off on a round-the-world journey was a fine decision.--An excerpt from Riding the Asian Dragon
Not every traveler has the confidence to ride with the nomads of Tibet and Mongolia. But then again, author Isabelle Boulet isn't your average traveler. Filled with the wanderlust of voyaging to far-off lands, Boulet creates moving vignettes filled with humor, subtle ironies, and the vastness of human compassion. Riding the Asian Dragon: Extraordinary Lives of Ordinary People, Boulet's memoir of the Asian leg of a year-long solo backpacking journey around the world, captures the anecdotes of other peoples' lives--other ordinary people who prove extraordinary.

About the Author:

Isabelle Boulet was born in France. She studied business at Middlesex University in London. Upon graduating, she moved to Edinburgh, Scotland, where she worked in marketing and communications for eleven years. To date, she’s traveled to forty-two different countries on six continents.
