Edgar Allan Poe goes down in history as the inventor of the detective story and the master of the macabre. Playwright and theater director Denise Despeyroux and illustrator Miquel Serratosa take you on a dark, mysterious journey through three of Poe's short stories: embark on a treasure hunt in "The Gold Bug"; visit an insane asylum in "The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether"; and face psychological terror in "The Fall of the House of Usher." This title includes safe 'PG' text and illustrations.

From Booklist:
This entry in the Dark Graphic Novels series adapts three Poe stories and successfully captures a creepy tone with decidedly PG handling. In “The Gold Bug,” a man becomes obsessed with a golden beetle that is the key to an ancient mystery. More mysterious than scary, the solution is somewhat loopy, but it does include basic code-breaking strategies that young detectives will find fascinating. “The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether” chronicles a man’s attendance at a banquet in an insane asylum and his dawning realization of what’s happened to the patients. “The Fall of the House of Usher,” the best-known of the lot, tells of a brother’s slow decline into insanity after the “death” of his sister. All the stories are given literate and accessible treatment and, appropriate to the age range, steer fairly clear of true horror. Serratosa’s highly distinctive art deforms heads and facial features, bogging things down in dreary grays and browns, which is most appropriate to the skewed sanity that runs gibbering through Poe’s tales. Grades 4-7. --Jesse Karp
