“SIB” tells an incredible story of my journey growing into adulthood during the 1950’s and 60’s. Sib is the nickname for Sibley Park in South Minneapolis. It was a social gathering place where children and young adults participated in many activities. Experiences I had at Sib molded my life and built character as well as lifelong friendships. My friends and I didn’t go much to each other’s houses. Instead, we met at Sib. There we played all kinds of sports, laughed and joked, taunted, and even came to blows at times. However, at the end of the day, we were still friends. Sib was a park like no other. It was there we shut out the rigors of the adult world. We had our own little world of rambunctious kids. Sib was community. Young people today are going through many of the same struggles I did growing up. I received as much of an education about lifelong lessons at Sib as I did in my formal education in the public school. Maybe even more so! When my large family moved just one block from Sib, I was a scared insecure little boy who wanted to find my place to fit in. Through many struggles, trials, and adventures, Sib provided the perfect atmosphere. My identity, character, and personality developed through childhood friends and individuals who believed in me and took a personal interest in my life. For that I am forever grateful. Teachers and parents will find countless opportunities for teachable moments in this book. The chapters are self-contained, yet progress, so you can read through at your own pace. Many of these stories I’ve told to my students throughout the years. Their lives have also been greatly impacted by my adventures and “misadventures” and the lifelong lessons they learned discussing them. It was difficult to write a story about a place in time, but I believe as you read this book you will come to understand the important role Sib played in my life and countless others as well. Enjoy my journey!

About the Author:
Tom Hall is a retired teacher from Mounds View School District in New Brighton, Minnesota. He has a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from the University of Minnesota and a Master’s Degree from Long Beach State College in California. Tom taught fifth or sixth grade children for thirty-four years, three years in California and thirty-one years in Minnesota. Former students fondly remember “Mr. Hall” for all his stories. Throughout his teaching career, Tom related to students by sharing his life with them. He continually told stories about experiences he actually had growing up. Not all were good. He was quite mischievous. Some were sad, some were adventurous, and some were hilarious. They all, however, brought teachable moments about choices one makes and consequences or rewards that may follow. Tom really enjoyed the dialogue and interaction resulting from a shared story. The stage was set for building character and learning lifelong lessons. That’s how “Mr. Hall” connected with his students. Tom brings his readers back in time to the 1950’s and 60’s when he grew up in South Minneapolis. He loved activity, action, and all kinds of sports. The same lessons and struggles Tom encountered growing up are still applicable today. They molded his life and built lasting character into his personality. All Tom’s books recreate experiences he’s actually had. Most of the stories he’s told to his students are included. Enjoy Tom’s amazing journey through childhood, through adolescence, and into maturity and adulthood. Maturity? Actually, Tom’s still a big little kid!
