A masterful and illuminating account of the author's journey through anorexia, EDNOS and binge-eating to find "a self worth living for," told from the unique perspective of one who is both insider and long-term recovered health professional. First person narrative (including diary entries and case notes) places the reader firmly in Michelle's teenage shoes, with the gentle oversight and commentary of her older, wiser (recovered) self who can now SEE and articulate what was impossible then. Michelle illuminates the predisposing and maintaining factors in her eating disorder, the conflict at the heart of her struggle with food and weight, the voices at war within her, the impact on self and family, and the factors that both hindered and propelled her along the difficult road to recovery. Told with compassion and insight, Illuminating Anorexia sheds light on the path into and out of an eating disorder for those who struggle, and for those who care for them.
Previously available in two editions, this book is now only available in the number-free edition to ensure it is suitable reading for any person. It has received excellent reviews from sufferers, carers and health professionals.

From the Author:

I wrote this book to illuminate a path that I could not then see and to articulate a struggle that I could not then name, in the hope that it would shed light on your path (my nameless friend who struggles). I wrote also to help those who care for you SEE beyond your struggle with food and weight to the person who lives inside, and to promote understanding because I believe it helps heal the hungry heart whose very battle is to "be"...understood and accepted.
I'd love to hear how you find the book. Please leave a review &/or write to me at michelle@michellesparkes.com

From the Inside Flap:

"Illuminating Anorexia is a recovery story that carries with it the weight of maturity, the wisdom of hindsight, the knowledge to teach, and more than twenty five years post recovery reflection."
June Rollestone, Professional Counsellor

Illuminating Anorexia sheds light on the path into and out of an eating disorder for those who struggle with disordered eating and for those who care for them. It tells the story of Michelle s journey through anorexia, EDNOS and binge-eating as a teen and young adult in search of a self worth living for. Told from the unique perspective of one who is both insider and long-term recovered health professional, Michelle illuminates the predisposing and maintaining factors in her eating disorder, the conflict at the heart of her struggle with food and weight, the voices at war within her, the impact on self and family, and the factors that both hindered and propelled her along the difficult road to recovery. Kirsty . .sheds light on the things you often can t explain or articulate when you are going through the disorder. Vanessa . .led me to get the help that I truly need. Rochelle . .has given me a more compassionate view and insight into the constant struggle [individuals with these issues] face on a daily basis. Kirsty . .made me feel a lot less guilty and ashamed of my own [struggle with ED]. Jen . .helped me understand what goes through the mind of a person with anorexia and relate to the [experience] of the mother, being a mother myself of a daughter with anxiety and addictions. Dominique . .really tells the odyssey of a long and complicated eating disorder like it is. Book Description CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform. Paperback. Condition: New. This item is printed on demand. 170 pages. Dimensions: 8.4in. x 5.5in. x 0.6in.Hospitalised with anorexia nervosa in 1978 at the age of 15, Sparkes weaves together a fascinating account of the issues that led her to question her value and right to life. She articulates the conflict at the heart of her struggle with food and weight and provides a compelling insight into the voices at war within her as her quest for perfection - a self worth living for - becomes increasingly untenable. Emerging from hospital with negligible weight gain and no real insight into her condition, Sparkes travels through non-purging bulimia, binge-eating and a back injury before discovering the self acceptance and inner peace she hungers for. With the benefit of hindsight and the wisdom of a health professional, she comments on the factors that could have propelled her recovery in the 80s, factors relevant for anyone struggling with an eating disorder today. This is a number-free edition of the original and is suitable for any person who would struggle to read a book containing body weight or BMI numbers. This item ships from La Vergne,TN. Paperback.
