About the Author:

William Compton, Ph.D. is a professor of psychology at Middle Tennessee State University. He has studied eastern approaches to psychology as a student, practitioner, and a scholar for over 45 years. Compton has published a number of papers in professional journals and presented at numerous professional conferences. His research has focused primarily on optimal mental health, meditation, eastern psychology, and the dimensions of well-being. He is also the author of "An Introduction to Positive Psychology" (2005) and "Positive Psychology: The Science of Happiness and Flourishing" (2nd edition) with Edward Hoffman (2013). He has studied primarily within the Zen Buddhist tradition, but has also studied yoga and tai chi chuan.

Review:

Eastern Psychology is a marvelous read.  Not since Gardner and Lois Murphy presented Asian Psychology more than four decades ago has a book appeared that compliments what can be seen as an anomalous Western psychology. Eastern psychologies are rich mixtures of philosophy, religion, and science that only in the West have become disciplines isolated from one another, Eastern Psychology reveals that the short past of Western psychology now isolated from philosophy and religion is but a shadow compared to the long histories of Buddhism, Hinduism, and Taoism who are as much psychology as they are philosophy and religion.  Not only is this book delightfully informative, it is an authoritative introduction to psychologies that we ignore at our peril lest we mistake shadow for substance.
Ralph W. Hood, Jr., Ph.D., recipient of the William James Award from APA Division 36: Psychology of Religion and Spirituality; coauthor of the Psychology of Religion: An Empirical Approach.

A clear, discerning overview and comparison of major Eastern and Western approaches to optimal well-being. I especially appreciated the many examples of how Eastern traditions have influenced Western psychology.
Swami Allan Ajaya, Ph.D. coauthor of Yoga and Psychotherapy, editor of Foundations of Eastern and Western Psychology.
