As a long-time Deputy Sheriff in Marin County, Weldon lived through some very interesting times relevant to law enforcement, participating in fighting the most vicious crimes emananting from the hottest issues of the day.  His many memorable experiences, in and out of uniform, were always in the interests of keeping the peace.

The book's subtitle, ". . . in Wild and Wooly West Marin; a collection of vivid vignettes," says a lot about its contents.  The author's tales brim with a variety of countercultural events, and the many ways that humans succumb to evil and occasionally rise in redemption.  Many revelations are devilishly humorous but all reflect the image of a conscientious man who has, fortunately for Marin County and California society, invested the major part of his life in keeping the sane balance between extremes of behavior found in the Golden State.

From the Author:

I was your personal cop, your keeper of the peace, your friend, the one you called when you needed someone and didn't have anyone else more appropriate, or handy, to call or didn't know whom to call; the one who patched you up to keep you from bleeding to death before you got to the hospital, the one who took you to Jail or the nut ward when you really needed to go; the one who forestalled or maybe prevented your suicide; the one who tried to wash the bloodstains off your rug or blankets; he who tenaciously, surreptitiously investigated you as a homicide suspect while consoling you over the sudden, unexplained death of your toddler in her sleep; the one who subdued you in your violent paranoia when you were crazed with angel dust; the man you invited to your college graduation after you straightened out your life; the one who drank, reminisced, laughed, suffered with you, rejoiced in your first live-born baby after being there at your sad miscarriages; the one who pursued you at high speed, impounded your car and took you to Juvie Hall to give you time to think and maybe keep you from killing yourself and your young friends; the one who squeezed your carotid artery shut so you mother could thank me later; the one you supported in my  times of need.

This is my story for you, so that you can better know me as I so intimately knew you.  It is only fair, is it not?  They are little tales of happiness and sadness, accomplishment and disappointment, silliness and sobriety, stupidity and enlightenment, risk and loss, raging fear and reluctant courage, exhilaration in the knowledge of having done, I think, the right or necessary things most of the time.  Most took place during the late sixties and early seventies in "Marvelous Marin" County, just North of the Golden Gate Bridge when I was a Resident Deputy Sheriff in the San Geronimo Valley and the rest of West Marin.  Things, they were a-happening -- being fired and reinstated (see post Epilogue), the Viet Nam War, crazy days (daze?) in the Haight-Ashbury, Janis and Jerry and Naomi and Sly, shoot-out at the Civic Center.  Day or night, when you called, I came, whether you wanted me or not.

You are my Friend and Compatriot.  You stood beside me when I was troubled by the bad things I've seen and had to do -- the blood and guts and the gore.  When I was hurting deep inside -- when I needed you, you were there.  Other times I was there for you in your own time of need, like when your child died of SIDS and you had to shoot up some heroin before you allowed me in, or when your spouse abandoned you when most needed.  Do you remember?  I do -- and am thankful and grateful for our friendship.  I open myself to you as you have exposed yourself to me.  Treat me gently; I already have a lot of hurts.

From the Back Cover:

This book can best be described as a "Great read" according to Bill Gleason,  homicide investigator with the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department, who caused the arrest of Charles Manson and others responsible for the murder of actress Sharon Tate and six others in 1969.

"I was instantly grabbed by the gut wrenching honesty of his widely varied experiences while working as a Resident Deputy Sheriff in rural Marin County.  He served as a Peace Officer during some of the most turbulent times in Northern California.  The pathos; humor; despair; joy; challenges met; the insider jokes; and his coping mechanisms -- they are all there.

"Whether you read one chapter at a time, or the whole book in one sitting, you will be enthralled or dismayed, shocked or entertained but, bet on it, you will be enlightened by his very personal encounters."
