The Turnagain Arm Gold Rush of 1896, preceded the Klondike, changing the face of Alaska forever. Memories of Old Sunrise chronicles one man's experiences during that pivotal time in Alaska's history. In his own words, A. W. Jack Morgan tells of the triumphs, disappointments, and the adventures of miners who survived backbreaking labor, brutal winters, and mind-numbing isolation in the Last Frontier. With a cast of colorful characters, this autobiography brings back to life the bustling times of a bygone era.

About the Author:

A.W. Jack Morgan wrote his memoirs in his ninety-second year, describing in vivid detail the account of his years in Alaska from 1897-1901. Morgan was born in Franklin, North Carolina. At the age of sixteen, Morgan set out on his own and worked westward on the railroads to the logging camps of the Pacific Northwest. At twenty-nine, Morgan headed north to try his hand at gold mining on Alaska's Kenai Peninsula. This autobiography captures his years on the Last Frontier.

Review:

The memoirs of A.W. Jack Morgan offer insights into day-to-day life in the gold mining camps of the Turnagain Arm....Morgan's writing style is inviting and he spins his story with an easy humor. Most enjoyable is Morgan's ability to breathe life into the memorable people and experiences of Alaska's past. --Sheila Evans Hanson, Alaska History, v.10, no.1 (Spring 1995)

Memories of Old Sunrise is a real treasure. Dr. Rolfe Buzzell's exceptional introduction gives the reader a thorough background of the times. The excellent index, an abundance of maps, and improved photographs make this second edition an authoritative and entertaining account of what really happened in Sunrise. --Diane Oltheis, Museum Development Coordinator, Hope and Sunrise Historical and Mining Museum, 2013.
