You probably already know someone like Fiona: she's coasting through life, drinking a little bit too much, and collecting broken relationships. As the only reporter at The Oakfield Tribune, she is used to dealing with incompetent police—who can't keep their eyes off her rear end—and cranky townspeople, but when the bizarre act of foot-tickling turns to murder she begins to suspect the police have the wrong man behind bars, and sets out to exonerate him. In over her head, Fiona relies on a colorful cast of characters to help solve the crime—while trying to make sense of her personal life—in this darkly funny novel with a cinematic sensibility.

I was once a newspaper reporter in a town where we did, in fact, have a legendary Foot Tickler. (We were also home to Gayle King and Candace Bushnell.) In real life no one ever found him. He may still be lurking in the shadows, waiting to tickle his next foot, but I have long since fled (partly to spare my feet a torturous tickling). I went on to spend almost two years at HarperCollins Publishers with the misleading title of Rights Coordinator, and learning a lot about the business of book publishing. I’ve harassed my fair share of editors and publishers to approve an ARE cover, and I’ve pestered dozens of editorial assistants for flap copy. I’ve sat through cover meetings, and cursed authors (and I must admit, agents too) who just couldn’t seem to approve anything in a timely manner. I eventually realized the day-to-day business of books wasn’t for me. Now I am the editor at a small B2B magazine. I found myself writing in favor of self-publishing at my day-job, and after getting another round of rejections from agents I decided to follow my own advice and try the self-publishing route. In other words, I'm kind of winging it. Follow me on Twitter @TheresaCramer
