9781467968027: Dark Blonde: A Mike Angel Mystery

Julia Gateswood hires reluctant PI, Mike Angel, to find her missing sister, but Julia's social position and the sordid past of the sister make this anything but a simple case. Julia's a mysterious ex-beauty queen, who married for ambition to congressman Henry Gateswood, a charismatic ex-professor running for a vacated US Senate seat from Illinois in 1962. When Julia's sister Gail, a loose woman with past shady connections, disappears, Julia calls on private eye Mike Angel, who quickly learns his new employer isn't everything she seems to be, but what she is beyond a doubt is a great hypnotist of Mike's libido. Before Mike is hardly into the case, he's visited by Julia's strange secretary, who later finds the missing sister's headless body in the guesthouse of the Gateswood estate. Mike and his unofficial partner, Rick Anthony, a 25 year veteran of the NYC detective force and, whose vocabulary suffers from too many NYU grad classes, get to the crime scene before the police and follow clues that pit them against powerful Chicago mobsters. Rick was a partner for many years with Mike's late father, who was murdered on his first case as a private investigator. O.W. Wilson, a famous police chief and gangbuster from Kansas City, has taken over the Chicago force and enlists Mike to seek the department mole connected with the year old Summerfield scandal, where police were in cahoots with robbers. Mike hunts for Gail's killer while sorting out the threads of motive, political intrigue, bad cops and an arrogant DA, and Henry Gateswood's role. All the while Mike becomes conflicted by attraction to Julia, who disappears at a critical juncture, only to discover that her husband has placed her in a sanitarium. What were Henry's real motives for putting her away? Who killed Gail and how does she fit into Chicago mobsters on the run from the Summerfield scandal? Mike and Rick follow too many clues to a surprising conclusion. One twisting aspect of Mike's investigative instincts is often timely warnings from the "voice" of his late father, and also through sensations felt in a long scar Mike won during a shootout with the Russian mob who was behind his father's death. He also struggles with a desire to commit to Molly Bennett, his office manager and love interest, while conflicted with an over-healthy desire for attractive women who cross his path. Set in Chicago in 1962, Dark Blonde is the 3rd in the Mike Angel Series, each a stand-alone tale.

From the Author:

The "Dark" series of 4 (to date) Mike Angel Mystery novels began with the stitching of several short stories into Dark Quarry, the first in the series. When the old program "Amazon Shorts" came along I put several short stories up, including this novel, Dark Blonde, which was offered in 8 segments. I received several favorable (even gushing) reviews.

When Amazon or Kindle Direct came along, I put all 4 novels up at the end of December, 2010.

During the writing of these novels, the 3 main characters, Mike Angel (age 30), Molly Bennett (24), and Rick Anthony (60) have grown and come alive to me. I know what they might say and do in every situation. This affliction happens to writers. It is a plus, believe me. I have a 5th novel in the early planning stages. I incorporate a lot of historical fiction, using real names and events from the early 1960s. I also have seduction or erotic scenes in each novel--tastefully done I would hope. Beyond that, Mike either suffers from or is blessed by the "voice" of his late father coming at critical junctures of danger or resolution. So, this would be supernatural or paranormal elements, not usually found in detective novels. Recent input from Kindle boards led me to change & enlarge the cover fonts. Though some see the images as erotica, I see only what Mike sees--good looking females, mostly undraped. Seduction is his weakness, his trap, and also an underlying sub-plot in the last 3 novels, as he moves closer to a committment with Molly Bennett, his secretary & helpmate whom he met in the first novel. I appreciate any feedback on these books. They were very fun to write, and quite a change from the academic reference books on Mark Twain that I have (and am) publishing. Good reading!

From the Inside Flap:

Mike Angel (aka D'Angelo) tried the police force after a stint in the Army and some time in Korea, but went into private investigations after the slaying of his father, a retired NYPD detective, killed on his first case as a PI.  Mike has a weakness for flashy women, and often times booze; he is probably too young (30-33) for a PI (most are much older), but his anger and guilt over his father's death have forced him to try to live up to his father's dream. Understandably, he is often conflicted about continuing as a PI.

A native of Jersey, Mike moved to Chicago during the first novel, partly to investigate a Russian mob with connections to the old Purple Gang of Detroit, and partly to follow Molly Bennett, who became his office whiz. Molly, 24, has all the elements that Mike needs in a woman, yet committment has yet to become a priority.

Rick Anthony, age 60, retired NYPD detective, worked with Mike's father on the force. He came to Chicago after his retirement and talked Mike into a partnership. Over-educated from all the classes he took at NYU, Rick is a logical and wise counterpart to Mike's brash headstrong approach. They make a great team, backed up by Molly in the office.
