This Volume 1 is published as part of a series of books covering the new European Commission’s Aircrew Regulation 1178/2011 and the Guidance Material (GM) for Flight Crew Licensing Part-FCL. Authority Requirements for Aircrew Part-ARA and Organisation Requirements for Aircrew Part-ORA are also included in the series. This volume contains all the aircrew licensing requirements applicable to AEROPLANE and TOURING MOTOR GLIDERS and will serve those with a particular interest in becoming a pilot. For those already holding an aeroplane or TMG pilot licence, the book offers detailed explanation on the new EU rules and how to obtain additional licence privileges, or additional qualifications to act, for example, as instructors and examiners. The third edition includes the amendments to the Commission Regulation No. 1178/2011 published in 2014, i.e. the Commission Regulations No. 70/2014 and No. 245/2014. The complete series of books are written in a logical manner, making even the most difficult issues easy to understand. All the references to the official publications are included in the text. Therefore, the books should also serve as a valuable reference for Training Organisations and Competent Authorities. My background in civil aviation regulation goes back over 22 years, of which 17 years with the FCL department of the UK Civil Aviation Authority and 5 years with the Joint Aviation Authorities (JAA). Prior to 1990 I also served as a military pilot in the British Army. During my time with the JAA I had the pleasure of answering numerous questions from the 42 JAA Member States, arising from individual pilots, Training Organisations and National Aviation Authorities. I also had the pleasure of personally meeting and training hundreds of pilots and staff members of these organisations. The series of books ‘Part-FCL Made Easy: Handbook for Pilot Licensing’ are dedicated to all those friends and colleagues whom I met and trained across Europe and other continents, over the years.
