Anychair Yoga is a chair-based practice suitable for a wide variety of people ranging from the very fit to those with limited moving ability due to injury or other circumstances, such as being confined in the office or at home for a long time. Low impact yoga postures combined with breathing techniques promote release of serotonin, the neurotransmitter responsible for feeling relaxed and happy.
The program described in this book goes beyond just using a chair as an aid for some stretches. Yoga is about bringing things together by cultivating and expanding awareness. This program aims at fostering wellbeing at very deep levels by bringing together the tangible and the less tangible aspects of a human being into a cohesive, gentle, yet powerful practice. Standard yoga poses encountered in a regular mat-based practice have been adapted to fit the needs of people for whom such a practice is not an option.
Anychair Yoga is for everybody. It addresses the needs of people spending long ours in the office, on long airplane travels, of those recovering after brain surgery or other conditions where the sense of balance and coordination has been affected. It is for seniors as well as for athletes temporarily limited by injury. It can be used as an aid, to facilitate recovery from sport injuries and similar conditions that make locomotion and/or standing difficult.
...And why chair yoga? Chairs are versatile yoga props and almost always at hand. Often times you don’t even need to look specifically for a chair because you may be already sitting on one! And if you’ve been sitting on a chair for a long time, with your back, neck and hips feeling increasingly stiffer and numb, getting fidgety, with an irresistible urge to move around, well then you are in the right place at the right time for Anychair Yoga! You just need motivation and goal clarity to pursue your practice.
