The book tells the story of a woman who in 1997 goes to Afghanistan in the spur of the moment to fulfil her dream of meeting the great Afghan Mujahedin leader Ahmad Shah Massoud - The Lion of Panjshir.
As such this book is far more than a historic account of Massoud's last years. This is a story of deep affection and admiration for the great leader, his country and his cause by a woman living thousands of miles away from Afghanistan.
As the story develops the author tells in subtle details of Massoud's character, nature and ambitions, the Afghan landscapes, the people and their sufferings.
The "Afghan tragedy" comes alive through the eyes of a foreigner, who is Afghan at heart - but here the angle is inside-out.
Ahmad Shah Massoud, the most prominent leader of the Afghan Mujahedin since the 1980s, has been considered a guerrilla genius for his successful tactics which were instrumental at expelling the Soviets out of Afghanistan and holding back the Taliban from taking the whole of Afghanistan until 2001.
Sebastian Junger - the author of the "Perfect Storm" visited Massoud at the frontlines in 2000 and had this to say about the commander:  "There was something about his face, the look in his eyes, his smile, the way he spoke, that made it clear we were in the presence of a very great man."
This quote reflects the immediate impact Massoud had on the author and this resulted in her writing of this book. It was because of him that she went to Afghanistan for five years to assist in the development effort
This book is historical fiction and as such told against the backdrop of historic facts, actual persons and places of recent Afghan history.
