Tom Hackett is a petty criminal. But that's not how he sees it. To himself he's a man who lives on his wits, and if what he does is not strictly honest - well, so what if no-one gets hurt? After all, it's only money. After a life of dead-end jobs, the latest of which is as a night club bouncer, he becomes the personal driver to Declan Corrigan, the boss of a big London criminal gang. He decides another career change is due and to help him on his way he steals £50,000 from Corrigan and heads north. By doing so he is signing his own death warrant. When his car develops problems he hides from the chasing thugs but still he cannot resist a scam that involves two rich and elderly old men - identical twins who do not know which of them is the older. Hackett is able to enlighten them - at a price, of course. Then ex D.I Johnson comes on the scene. Hackett's personal life is in a mess with a pending divorce, his ex-wife to be and her violent 'waste of space' boy friend and a daughter he dotes upon.
