'English for Medical Purposes:Doctors' was written specifically for a pilot course for doctors in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, however, it is easily transferable to the medical English class-room. Around the world there is great awareness of the need to communicate with patients in the home country using English as a lingua franca. As more people travel especially to world events such as the Olympics and World Cups, there is is pressure on healthcare workers to be able to communicate treatment and explain medical procedures to English-speaking patients in the case of accidents and unexpected admission to hospital.
The book focuses on common communication areas for doctors in a healthcare setting. Role plays give students the opportunity to practise the sort of conversations they will have with patients in hospital. Emphasis is on the understanding of medical terminology and everyday terms to enable explanations and instructions to be given to patients in English.The book is aimed at B2-C1 Level.
Virginia Allum is the co-author of both 'Cambridge English for Nursing' books and author of several medical English books for doctors, nurses and nursing assistants. She has worked as a Nurse Educator and lecturer in Nursing as well as being a teacher of ESOL and medical English. She is currently authoring on-line courses in medical English and writes a regular English for Nursing article for a French Nurses' magazine. She is also a practising RN in England.
