We're are republishing this classic early work with a new introductory biography of the author. Henry James was born in New York City in 1843. James published his first story, 'A Tragedy of Error', in the Continental Monthly in 1864, when he was twenty years old. From 1915 he was a hugely prolific author, eventually producing twenty novels and more than a hundred short stories and novellas, as well as literary criticism, plays and travelogues. Notable works include The Europeans (1878), Washington Square (1880), The Bostonians (1886), and one of the most famous ghost stories of all time, The Turn of the Screw (1898).

Henry James was born the son of a religious philosopher in New York City in 1843. His famous works include The Portrait of a Lady, Washington Square, Daisy Miller, and The Turn of the Screw. He died in London in 1916, and is buried in the family plot in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
