Economists claim that economics is everywhere. It’s in work, marriage, sports, and crime. If economics permeates all aspects of our lives, does it also show up in the afterlife? To answer this question, Bookman explores views of life after death, across cultures and throughout history. She boldly identifies economic concepts and principles in mythology, art, literature, religion and popular culture that help answer questions such as: Do the dead have jobs? What’s the price of admission to the hereafter? Is there an energy crisis in hell? Can the dead outsource their sins? Eighty percent of Americans believe in some form of afterlife and an even larger number say the economy is their largest concern. Do They Take Credit Cards in Heaven? is a free-spirited investigation of the hereafter that bridges these two issues. At times humorous, occasionally controversial, and consistently thought-provoking, this clever and informative book adds a new dimension to our understanding of both economics and the afterlife.

About the Author:

Milica Z. Bookman earned a doctorate in economics and holds degrees from Brown University, London School of Economics, and Temple University. A professor at Saint Joseph’s University, she has published some dozen books including Economics in Film and Fiction, Medical Tourism in Developing Countries, and Tourists, Migrants and Refugees. Her books were named Choice’s Outstanding Book of the Year, her readings were aired on C-SPAN, and she is the recipient of the Tengelmann Award for Excellence in teaching and research.

Review:

A unique overview of how everyone from religious leaders to cartoonists has viewed the afterlife, and why it's all about economics at the core.  This book is informative, fun to read, and absolutely like no other. Steven E. Landsburg, author of The Armchair Economist and More Sex is Safer Sex: The Unconventional Wisdom of Economics

Bookman offers the reader a wealth of interesting facts, thought-provoking sidebars and witty anecdotes about financial entanglements of the hereafter. Her work is a must for anyone interested in economics, life after death or who simply craves a good read. Miriam Van Scott, author of Encyclopedia of Heaven

Bookman takes readers on an entertaining tour of everything from the price of energy in hell to property rights in heaven. Drawing on extensive research across, she shows us that we can't escape the laws of supply and demand- even when we're dead. Sarah Murray, author of Making an Exit: From the Magnificent to the Macabre, How We Dignify the Dead

There probably aren't any economists in heaven, but Milica Bookman shows that there's plenty of economics. This wide-ranging romp puts the dismal science to the ultimate test. Yoram Bauman, co-author of The Cartoon Introduction to Economics

Well researched and engaging, Do They Take Credit Cards in Heaven? is a fascinating study of afterlife beliefs from an economic perspective. Rebecca Price Janney, author of Who Goes There? A Cultural History of Heaven and Hell
