Alexander Iosiphovich Beim (Al Beim) is descendent from a long line of Russian Karaims in the Crimea, tracing his lineage to the 16th century. After evading the Communists and persecution by the Nazis, his family (father, mother and younger brother, George) immigrated to the US at the end of World War II. He and his brother completed High School in Nyack, NY. After some Army enlisted service, he attended The Ohio State University. In June 1962, he received his BS degree, was commissioned an Army Lieutenant and married Judith Ann Chamberlin, all on the same day. During a long military career, Al Beim headed personnel offices and directed administrative systems and programs, with tours in Europe and combat in Vietnam. He earned a Masters degree in Public and Personnel Administration, taught graduate classes at American University, authored many magazine articles and was editor and contributing editor to professional journals. After the military, he joined the Federal Civil Service and worked many years as an Associate Director in the Smithsonian Institution. Judy Beim is of German and British descent. She graduated from Beavercreek High School in Ohio, attended Peabody College and The Ohio State University, majoring in history. She accompanied her husband on his tours in Europe and in the US, and managed the Beim finances and household. Judy and Al Beim live in Falls Church, Virginia, enjoy good food and are both accomplished chefs. Their book of favorite recipes, We Live in Order to Eat, is dedicated to sons Peter and Alex.
